As Donald Trump’s presidency comes to a close, so does Alec Baldwin’s time as his top impersonator. To cap off the last four years, Baldwin and writer Kurt Andersen have collaborated on Hasta la Vista, America: Trump’s Farewell Address, an audiobook imagining a final speech by the president.
The 42-minute Pushkin Industries project, written by Andersen and performed by Baldwin, encompasses a parody of a Farewell Address, 2021 State of the Union Address and a preview of an imagined blockbuster presidential memoir, along with music and sound effects.
“I was only interested in doing Trump, again, in any form, if it was with Kurt, who’s the greatest political satirist as far as I’m concerned,” said Baldwin.
Hasta la Vista, America serves as a bookend for Baldwin and Andersen, who spoofed Trump’s first 100 days in office with the 2017 book You Can’t Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story of My Fantastic First Year as President Donald J. Trump (A So-Called Parody).
“In November The New York Post’s Page Six reported that ‘one source familiar with the president’ said ‘Trump is being bombarded with book and TV deals that could be worth a staggering $100 million,’ ” says Andersen of his inspiration to return for the final project. “I was disinclined to spend months channeling Trump again or to publish in the spring, when we’ll all want our minds Trump-free, but then Alec suggested doing just a chapter or two, and that he’d be up for performing it. Since You Can’t Spell America Without Me ended with Trump becoming a paranoid lunatic barricading himself in his bedroom, and that’s now come true, I decided I couldn’t resist – let’s reunite for a fast good-riddance finale.”
Andersen’s relationship with Trump goes back to 1986, when as co-founder of Spy magazine, he featured the future president in the debut issue’s cover story: “Jerks: The Ten Most Embarrassing New Yorkers.”
“Four years ago I rebooted my old Trump-satire sideline — writing a parody memoir, inventing a new epithet for social media (The Greatest Self-Parodist of All Time), etc. — and found that his grotesque reality constantly threatens to catch up to over-the-top satirical fiction. As it has done just the last week,” he says.
With an intention to publish while Trump is still in office, the project will follow up their first parody as “a pseudo-unscripted speech of some kind combined with a pitch/preview of his forthcoming memoir,” adds Andersen.
Baldwin has portrayed Trump on Saturday Night Live since he entered the political sphere, winning an Emmy for his performance in 2017. You Can’t Spell America Without Me imagined Trump’s first days in the White House, delving into everything from Ivanka Trump’s neck rubs to West Wing decor.
The audiobook will go on sale for $0.99 on Jan. 13, in the final days before Joe Biden’s inauguration. Listen to an excerpt below:
