Comedian D.L. Hughley was hospitalized Friday night after he passed out onstage during a stand-up performance at Nashville’s Zanies comedy club. After initially being treated for exhaustion and dehydration, he was diagnosed with COVID-19.

“He was suffering from exhaustion after all the week’s work and travel, and was kept overnight at the hospital for tests under doctor’s orders. He is awake and feeling better, and wishes to thank everyone for the very kind prayers and thoughts,” Hughley’s representative told The Hollywood Reporter prior to the diagnosis.

A Twitter video posted Friday evening captured Hughley performing a comedy routine as part of a Juneteenth virtual fundraiser. At one point his speech begins to slur, then he slumps over on his stool before falling to the ground. In the video, a man comes onstage to help Hughley before he collapses, after which a team of men appears to help him off the stage.

Fellow comic Jay Washington took to Twitter on Saturday to share he’d spoken with someone close to Hughley and “he is doing fine now.” Additionally, DJ Vlad, CEO of, wrote on Twitter that he has spoken to Hughley and he “is ok.”

On Saturday afternoon, Hughley shared an update on his condition via a video message on Twitter. “I’m just being released from Saint Thomas hospital and actually I want to thank them for taking such good care of me,” said the comedian, who also thanked everyone for their well wishes and prayers.

“It turns out they ran a battery of tests, and I also tested positive for COVID-19, which blew me away,” said Hughley. “I was what they call asymptomatic, I didn’t have any symptoms, the classic symptoms I didn’t have. I didn’t have flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, a cough, a low-grade fever — I still don’t have a fever. I didn’t have a loss of smell or taste. Apparently, I just lost consciousness. So, in addition to all the other stuff you have to look out for, if your ass pass out in the middle of a show onstage, you probably need to get tested.”

On Monday, Hughley’s rep confirmed that Hughley took private medical transportation from Nashville and is now in quarantine at home.

Hughley is best known for hosting BET’s ComicView from 1992-93, starring in the ABC comedy The Hughleys and appearing as a featured comedian in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Recently, he’s appeared on The Comedy Get Down and NBC series Heartbeat.
