The North American rights to The Diaries of Alan Rickman have been sold to Sarah Crichton at Henry Holt and Company, an imprint of Macmillan, it was announced Sunday.

The book, which was bought in auction from Natalie Galustian at DHH Literary, will consist of 27 volumes worth of diary entries written by the late actor. The diaries will be edited by Alan Taylor into a single volume.

Simon Thorogood, Editorial Director at Canongate, has acquired World English language rights.

“Which is your favorite Alan Rickman? Jamie in Truly Madly Deeply, Hans Gruber in Die Hard, on stage as Elyot in Private Lives? Maybe it’s the Sheriff of Nottingham, or perhaps Professor Severus Snape? Or why not all of the above?,” Thorogood said in a statement. “With the publication of his diaries, fans everywhere are in for a rare treat. Here is the real Alan Rickman: smart, passionate, funny, caring and insightful.”

Of the upcoming book, Henry Holt and Company says: “The diaries paint a rare portrait of a world class actor, a tireless political activist, an avid traveler and a devoted friend. Handwritten, starting in the early ’90s and kept for the rest of his life, the diaries offer a rare insight into the mind of the man and the artistic, social and political worlds he inhabited.”

“Alan Rickman is one of our most celebrated and beloved actors, as reflected in the overwhelming positive response from publishers,” Galustian said. “However, Canongate’s hugely impressive pitch and creative vision for the book was knock out. On behalf of Alan’s widow Rima and the Rickman estate we are thrilled to be working with Canongate to bring the diaries to life as Alan intended.”

The diaries span over 25 years of Rickman’s life and career in which he starred in films such as the Harry Potter franchise, Die HardRobin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Love, Actually and more. Rickman passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 69 in 2016.

“I’m delighted that Canongate will be publishing Alan’s diaries, and couldn’t have wished for a finer appointment of editor than Alan Taylor,” Rima Horton, Rickman’s widow, told The Guardian. “The diaries reveal not just Alan Rickman the actor, but the real Alan – his sense of humour, his sharp observation, his craftsmanship and his devotion to the arts.”

The book will be published in Autumn 2022.
