Hello Sunshine and Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club is joining forces with book subscription company Literati to help spread some holiday cheer to children.
Literati, Hello Sunshine and Reese’s Book Club have partnered to distribute 11,000 new books to The Book Foundation in Los Angeles, it was announced Friday. The Book Foundation aims to promote literacy by placing new books into the homes of low-come children. Since March, the Book Foundation has donated over 100,000 books.
Through their new partnership, books will be distributed to children in foster care, children at high-risk for homelessness or living in emergency shelters, children in county hospitals and students in Title 1 schools.
“Our partnership with Reese’s Book Club has allowed us to extend our reach to underserved children and families so far beyond what we could have imagined,” said The Book Foundation founder Ruth Stalford.
“Books light up our world, inviting us to become fully immersed in a story and our imaginations,” said Cynthia Rupeka Vice President of Reese’s Book Club. “We’re so thrilled to be able to partner with Literati and The Book Foundation to help more kids share in this joy this holiday season.”
This year, Reese’s Book Club launched a YA book club in which Witherspoon selects a monthly pick for young readers. Leah Johnson’s debut, You Should See Me in a Crown (Scholastic Press) was chosen as the first YA selection in August.
Meanwhile, Literati Kids, which curates boxes based on age and theme for children ages 12 and under, has donated 120,000 books back into the community this year. Most recently, Literati has expanded to offer curated collections from NBA superstar Stephen Curry, Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson and New York Times bestselling author Susan Orlean.
“Literati’s mission is to promote lifelong learning through the thoughtful curation and discussion of books,” said CEO and Founder Jessica Ewing. “Every kid deserves to have access to books and reading. This pandemic has affected the lives of so many children, and we know that receiving new books ahead of the holiday will bring them a little bit of joy during such a difficult time.”
