Sandi Scully, the wife of beloved Los Angeles Dodgers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully, died Sunday evening at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center after a battle with ALS, the team announced. She was 76.
Born on Dec. 27, 1944, in Cascade, Virginia, Sandra Hunt was raised in Lexington, North Carolina. She was working as the executive assistant to Los Angeles Rams owner Carroll Rosenbloom when she met Vin after they were set up by Rams attorney Ed Hookstratten.
They were married in November 1973. She was divorced and had two kids, Todd and Kelly, from a previous marriage; he was a widower with three children. (Vin was married for 15 years to his first wife, Joan, until she died of an accidental medical overdose in 1972 when she was 35.)
His son Michael, 33, died in a helicopter crash in 1994.
Sandi also is survived by daughter Catherine, whom she had with Vin, and stepchildren Kevin and Erin. She was a grandmother to 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Vin Scully, 93, started as a member of the Dodgers organization in 1950 — when the team played in Brooklyn — and called the team’s games until he retired following the 2016 regular season.
The Scully family wished to express their thanks to the UCLA team and the Los Angeles Fire Department. Donations in her memory can be made to the Department of Neuromuscular Disease at UCLA/ALS Research.
