Mahajan added: “Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required the surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”
The statement said that the 15-time major winner is “currently awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room.”
The incident occurred around 7:12 a.m. on Tuesday, on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes in California. Woods’ car, a 2021 Genesis SUV, traveled “several hundred feet” when it crashed, Sheriff Alex Villanueva of Los Angeles County told reporters at a news conference later on Tuesday.
The sheriff said investigators at the scene “did not see any evidence of impairment,” but that Woods appeared to be going “a greater speed than normal.” Villanueva said there were no skid marks on the ground and that the weather was not a factor.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said that Woods was wearing a seatbelt.
The crash investigation is ongoing and likely to take “several weeks,” Villanueva said.
